A Flatter, Firmer Midsection

Abdominoplasty in Fremont, San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco.

An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is the perfect solution for tightening loose or sagging skin around the abdomen. Whether due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or aging, many individuals struggle to achieve a firm, toned stomach. Our tummy tuck procedure removes excess skin and tightens the underlying muscles, giving you a smoother, flatter midsection.

Tummy Tuck (aka Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck can help you regain confidence in your body, especially after significant weight loss or childbirth.

What to Expect

Let Fremont cosmetic surgeon Dr. Paul Gorman help you achieve your cosmetic surgery goals. We are proud to help our patients enhance their natural beauty and improve their self-esteem by offering proven cosmetic surgery treatments and procedures in an environment that is warm, welcoming, and committed to your satisfaction.

01.

Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Paul Gorman and his professional team will discuss your goals and medical history, and evaluate your abdominal area to determine the best approach.

02.

Surgery

The procedure typically lasts 2-4 hours, usually involves some liposuction, followed by a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen, the removal of excess skin, and tightening of the underlying muscles. The belly button is repositioned if necessary.

03.

Results

After the procedure, you’ll wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and support healing. You may need to take 1-2 weeks off from work and avoid strenuous activities for 6-8 weeks

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Abdominoplasty?

Good candidates for a tummy tuck share several common characteristics. The best outcomes are seen in patients who:
  • =Have loose or sagging skin around the abdomen that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise.
  • =Want to improve the appearance of their midsection by removing excess skin and tightening muscles.
  • =Experience weakened abdominal muscles, often due to pregnancy or significant weight loss.
  • =Are in good general health and have maintained a stable weight.
Tummy tuck surgery is not a weight loss procedure. Ideal candidates are at or near their goal weight and plan to maintain that weight after surgery. If you are considering future pregnancies, it is generally recommended to wait until you are done having children before undergoing abdominoplasty, as pregnancy after a tummy tuck can reverse the results.
Patients who smoke are strongly advised to quit well before surgery, as smoking significantly impairs healing and increases the risk of complications.
If you are unsure whether you qualify, a consultation with Dr. Gorman is the best way to find out. He will give you an honest assessment based on your health history, current anatomy, and realistic goals.

Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures

We offer different types of abdominoplasty based on your specific needs:
01.

Full Abdominoplasty

The full tummy tuck is the most comprehensive option and addresses both the upper and lower abdominal areas. Dr. Gorman makes a low horizontal incision just above the pubic line, running from hip to hip. Through this incision he removes excess skin and fat, tightens the abdominal wall muscles (including repairing diastasis recti where present), and repositions the belly button. Liposuction of the flanks is often incorporated for a more complete contour. A full abdominoplasty is appropriate for patients with moderate to significant skin laxity and muscle separation across the entire abdominal area.

02.

Mini Abdominoplasty

The mini tummy tuck addresses skin laxity and excess tissue confined to the area below the belly button. The incision is shorter than a full abdominoplasty, the navel is not repositioned, and recovery is generally somewhat faster. This option is well suited for patients who are close to their goal body contour but have a persistent lower abdominal bulge or loose skin that does not respond to exercise. Patients with significant muscle separation above the navel are typically not candidates for a mini tummy tuck.

Extended Abdominoplasty

The extended tummy tuck is designed for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and have excess skin not only across the abdomen but also extending around the flanks and hips. The incision is longer than a full tummy tuck and allows Dr. Gorman to address a larger surface area in a single procedure. This approach is commonly chosen by post-bariatric patients or those who have experienced major body composition changes.

Benefits of Abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck delivers both aesthetic and functional improvements that patients often describe as life-changing. Beyond the physical transformation, many patients report a significant improvement in how they feel in their own body and how easily they can wear the clothing they want.

A tummy tuck offers several long-lasting benefits, including:
=

A Firmer, Flatter Stomach

By removing excess skin and tightening muscles, the procedure creates a more toned, defined abdomen.

=

Improved Posture

Strengthening and tightening the abdominal muscles can improve your posture and alleviate back pain caused by weakened core muscles.

=

Boosted Confidence

A smoother, firmer midsection can enhance your body image and increase self-esteem, especially for individuals who have struggled with body changes due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.

=

Reduced Stretch Marks

In many cases, the removal of excess skin also reduces the appearance of stretch marks, particularly those below the belly button.

It is important to note that stretch marks outside the area of removed skin will not be affected by the procedure. Stretch marks located on the skin that is excised may be removed along with that tissue. Dr. Gorman will discuss realistic outcomes for your specific case during your consultation.

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction

It’s important to understand the differences between a tummy tuck and liposuction:

=

Tummy Tuck

Focuses on removing excess skin and tightening weakened muscles, ideal for patients with loose skin and muscle separation.

=

Liposuction

Primarily targets the removal of fat deposits but does not address loose skin or muscle tightening. Liposuction may be combined with a tummy tuck for optimal body contouring.

The right choice depends on what your abdomen actually needs. If your primary concern is stubborn fat with good skin elasticity, liposuction alone may be appropriate. If you have loose or overhanging skin, weakened or separated abdominal muscles, or significant changes from pregnancy or weight loss, a tummy tuck, with or without liposuction, will deliver results that liposuction alone cannot.
