Nearly 70 percent of Americans have submental fullness, or in laymen's terms, a double chin. And many of them would like to improve the appearance of their double chin through surgical or other aesthetic means.
Double chins are caused by a layer of fat that gathers beneath the chin. Lax skin in the area causes the fatty deposit to look more pronounced. Double chins can occur in anyone, not just people who are overweight. People who are at their ideal weight develop double chins, too, since dieting and exercise sometime aren't effective treatment methods.
Fortunately, there are several options to improve the appearance of a double chin. Read on to learn which is right for you.
Chin (also called submental) liposuction immediately improves the appearance of a double chin that is created by a pocket of fat. To be effective, patients must have little-to-no excess skin in the chin and neck. Your cosmetic surgeon will remove the fatty deposits from the area under your chin and jaw and the front of the neck using a cannula and a suction device. The procedure takes about an hour and patients can return to their normal routine within a few days.
Kybella is a non-surgical option for addressing a double chin. Technically, Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which was approved by the FDA in 2015 to contour submental (or ‘chin’) fullness. Kybella is injected into the fatty area beneath the chin where it causes the rapid deterioration and absorption of fat cells. It also prevents fat cells from accumulating in the same area in the future. Fat that is destroyed is removed by the body's metabolic processes.
Most patients require six treatments, spaced about a month apart to achieve results with Kybella.
