Brazilian Butt Lift

What is the Brazilian Butt Lift?

The Brazilian Butt Lift, or buttock augmentation, uses your own fat to treat a flat or sagging backside creating instant fullness and volume. The procedure is done using large volume fat transfer, taking excess fat from another area of your body (typically abdomen, flanks or thighs) and transferring it to your buttocks to improve the contour, shape and projection. The end result of Brazilian Butt Lift is an overall uplifted look that is natural and attractive.

Am I a candidate for the Brazilian Butt Lift?

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a great choice for anyone with 2-3 areas of unwanted fat available for liposuction who wants to lift or enhance the contours of their buttocks. If you are seeking to reduce backside sagging, create shape in a flat buttocks or balance your curves a Brazilian Butt Lift may be right for you. You should be in good overall health and not have any active diseases or serious pre-existing medical conditions. Please note that not everyone has enough fat to support the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure.  Want to learn more?  Come in for a complimentary consultation with one of our cosmetic surgeon who will work with you to decide if butt lift is right for you.

How is the Brazilian Butt Lift performed?

The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure is performed in our Redwood City cosmetic surgery office using local tumescent anesthesia. You will also take some medicine by mouth that will relax you. Fat is harvested from one or more areas (typically thighs, abdomen, or flanks) using gentle liposuction techniques. The fat is processed, and carefully re-injected into your buttocks using one or more small (2 mm) access points over the treatment areas. A small injection cannula is used to carefully “spread” (or deposit) the fat throughout the treatment area. We monitor the amount of fat harvested and transferred, and use tactile and visual feedback to ensure a great result. Pre- and post-procedure photos are used (of course!) to track your progress over time. Overall, the procedure is well tolerated with the combination of local tumescent anesthesia and oral medications.

What are the advantages of the Brazilian Butt Lift over buttock implants?

The Brazilian Butt Lift uses your own fat for contouring, eliminating the immune response that occurs when implants are used and lowering the risk of infection and wound break down. The transferred fat often appears more natural and softer than traditional buttock implants. Finally, as a result of the large volume fat transfer procedure, you will enjoy the improved slimmer contours that follow liposuction.

How long will my results last?

The results should be long lasting, however, there are many factors that determine how long the Brazilian Butt Lift lasts. Your body naturally absorbs fat and to counter this we may over-inject initially. During the normal course of aging, your body shape will change so maintaining a stable and healthy body weight helps to maintain results. Dramatic weight gain or loss will affect the shape of your buttocks. It’s important to realize that success rates can vary from one person to the next.

What is the recovery like?

You may be swollen, bruised and sore for several days after the procedure. If you have some discomfort, this can usually be treated with over the counter pain medication. You will be asked to limit sitting directly on your buttocks for the first week following your Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. A compression garment is worn over the areas that underwent liposuction for two weeks. You will be able to return to many of your activities within days and most individuals return to work within a week following the procedure.

What are the risks of the Brazilian Butt Lift?

Complications are rare, but can include infection, asymmetry, fatty cysts, hematoma (blood collection), fat embolism, seroma (fluid collection), and permanent discoloration from bruising. Also, it is possible that you will not be happy with the final results. Most patients will have some swelling immediately after the procedure, and a smaller subset will have some bruising. Both of these conditions are temporary, and should resolve over a few days. It is important that you understand the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, its risks and benefits, and read and understand our fat transfer procedure informed consent before proceeding.
